Date: 2008-09-17

All accommodation at the Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park (GRNP) re-opened yesterday 16 September after it was damaged by high seas two weeks ago.

All accommodation at the Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park (GRNP) re-opened yesterday 16 September after it was damaged by high seas two weeks ago.

Park Manager Darren Claassen said that staff and contractors from Coast Care worked around the clock to make sure they will be able to re-open on Tuesday 16 September. “We have withdrawn some of the accommodation units and tented stands that were affected most, as it will take longer to refurbish these, but the rest are back on track.”

In addition to these units the Park swimming pool must also still be cleaned up and will only be in operation in November.

Mvusy Songelwa, Garden Route Regional Manager said that the team handled the situation extremely well. " Tsitsikamma Section has had a pounding from nature over the last few months – first the floods in November last year, then the fire that destroyed the boardwalk leading to the suspension bridge and now the highest seas in twenty years. You need a strong team to deal with all these challenges and management did really well.”

She said that what makes the Park vulnerable is the close proximity to a unique combination of indigenous forests, mountains and marine areas. “But that is also what makes the Park so special. We receive visitors from all over the world and even if nature sometimes throws us a curveball or two, we are proud to manage one of the most beautiful and diverse areas in the world. From Tuesday it is business as usual,” said Songelwa.
