Media Release: Chance to explore premier Karoo birding destination
Keen birders will have the chance to explore the premier Karoo birding destination during the Karoo National Park Birding Weekend to be held from 14 to 16 September 2012.
The Park is well known for its variety of bird species, and especially for its relatively high concentration of breeding pairs of Verraux’s Eagles. Booted Eagle and Pale Chanting Goshawk also occur.
While birding on the plains route, larks and chats are prominent as well as Karoo Korhaan, Ludwig’s Bustard and Namaqua Sandgrouse. The park’s best birding occurs in and around the campsite. Acacia Pied Barbet, Redeyed Bulbul, Karoo Scrub Robin, Cape Robinchat, Chestnutvented Titbabbler, Layard’s Titbabbler, Yellowbellied Eremomola, Palewinged Starling, Southern Doublecollared and Dusky Sunbird and Redheaded Finch are all ever present. Regional specials include Karoo Eremomela, Namaqua Warbler and Pririt Batis.
The weekend kicks off with registration and an evening function on Friday 14 September. Birders have the option of starting off their bird-spotting on Friday night after the function or on Saturday morning.
Birding teams will spend the Saturday exploring the Park and recording bird species. A prize-giving function and dinner will take place on Saturday evening at the Bulkraal Lapa. Birders will spend the Sunday of the weekend at leisure enjoying the Park’s facilities such as free guided walks, the Interpretive Centre, Fossil Trail and scenic drives.
Bookings are now open for the Birding Weekend and participants are limited. Entries close on 31 August 2012.
Costs for the weekend range from R250 per person without accommodation to R475 per person camping or R850 per person in chalets (sharing). This includes accommodation for two nights, registration fee and a dinner on Saturday evening but does not include the daily conservation fee for those who do not have a valid wild card.
