The grandson of one of the Kruger National Park’s (KNP) legendary rangers, Kim Wolhuter brought his two daughters to Skukuza to show them a bit of their proud KNP family history today (23 March 2005).
Lindy (9) and Penny (6) listened enraptured while their father told them the story of how their great grandfather – Harry Wolhuter – was attacked by a lion while travelling on horseback in what is now the Central Region of the KNP in August 1903. Wolhuter was able to wrestle the lion and eventually killed the predator with his sheath knife.
The great grandchildren of the legendary ranger were then shown the original knife, sheath, belt, the lion’s skin and other artefacts from the incident, which are presently on display at the Stevenson-Hamilton Museum in Skukuza.
“Those are the knife marks that were made when your great grandfather managed to kill the lion,” Kim explained while pointing towards two holes in the skin.
Kim is no stranger to the world of conservation and is an accomplished wildlife photographer and filmmaker. His grandfather, Harry Wolhuter served South Africa’s largest national park with distinction until his eventual death in 1964.
