Media Release: Churches assemble in KNP to pray against rhino poaching
The Kruger National Park (KNP), in partnership with various denominations from the neighbouring communities of the Park, held a church service on Saturday, 17 August 2013 at the Skukuza Soccer Field to pray for the rhino species and to condemn rhino poaching.
“We came here to ask God to intervene in this war and value Christians’ efforts in fighting this evil scourge that our country is currently facing. There is no doubt that indeed rhinos are under siege, but with increased cooperation from all levels of society, the results of success in apprehending the perpetrators will soar”, commented Mabasa.
Prayers for protection of the anti poaching teams and security forces, the KNP management and staff, communities in Mozambique and local; as well as against poachers and master minds (kingpins) were conducted.
This event is a follow-up on the one held in 2012 at Shingwedzi Rest Camp, wherein Christians came together to declare war against rhino poachers. “We appreciate the religious contribution because it brings about that heavenly power; from God which we need to fight rhino poachers” continued Mabasa.
Furthermore, he indicated that SANParks is doing everything in its abilities to empower the anti-poaching teams and ensure that they have all the necessary skills and equipment required to stay focused on this war, day and night.
Since the beginning of 2013, the country lost 561 rhinos and Kruger lost 350. 65 out of 156 poachers were arrested in KNP.
Officer Commanding, Special Projects, Maj Gen (ret) Johan Jooste gave an overview on the rhino poaching in the KNP.
Pastors led by Vineyard Christian Centre’s Pastor David Lebea, pray for the protection of security forces who are in the forefront at addressing the scourge of rhino poaching.
Pastor Rodgers Marimo from Hope of Glory prays for the KNP Management and Staff during the proceedings.
Christians connect in praise and worship during the church service.
