Experience the true hospitality of the Northern Region this festive season
Date: 11th December 2013
South African National Parks’ Northern Region invites you to come and experience the diversity and uniqueness of this magnificent region with three different parks located in different areas. Savannah grasslands, mountainous landscapes and being able to view where three countries and two rivers collide at the confluence, are some of the experiences that will make your festive season one to remember for a long time.
Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Maluti Mountains in the eastern Free State lies the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. This Park is true highland habitat, providing home to a variety of mammals and birds, including the rare bearded vulture (lammergeier) and the equally rare bald ibis, which breeds on the ledges in the sandstone cliffs. Horse riding, abseiling, guided walks and the Basotho Cultural Village living museum with a spectacular guided tour are some of the activities that are found in this park.
In the Province of Limpopo, just less than three hours’ drive from Pretoria and only twelve kilometres west of Thabazimbi, lies Marakele National Park. This park as its Tswana name suggests has become a 'place of sanctuary' for an impressive variety of wildlife, due to its location in the transitional zone between the dry western and moister eastern regions of South Africa. This Park may be small but offers the prospects of spotting all of Africa’s big five.
Further up north, about 70 kilometres east of Musina, lies the world renowned Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site, which is the ideal location for anyone interested in the park's wildlife and birds, to those in search of serenity, identity and the extraordinary history of the heritage site. Mapungubwe Hill, where archeologists excavated the famous golden rhino and other evidence of a wealthy African kingdom, is found in this very park.
Make your holiday worthwhile by visiting any or all of these parks this festive season. Kgotso! Pula! Nala!
