Old photos of the Kgalagadi

Unread postby Scops-owl » Tue May 27, 2014 11:46 am

My family and I first visited the Kgalagadi in 1961. My dad and his brother came from Kuruman. In the 60's it was remote and very few people visited there. We only stayed at Twee Rivieren and Mata Mata. Unfortunately I only visited the park again in 2008 and saw a tremendous change in the camps.

The only huts in Twee Rivieren in the 1960's. The house on the left belonged to the ranger.

My uncle decided to sleep under the stars as he had done as a boy. We are busy packing up to leave.

Fetching drinking water from one of the reservoirs. It was not advisable to stop under camelthorn trees or other shady places where animals gathered for shade as there were always lots of tampans that came out of the sand and could give you quite a nasty bite. Tampans are a type of tick.
