In September 2011 we saw Mr. and Mrs. Dung Beetle at the road towards Abrahamskraal.

Wednesday 11th December 2013 - continued

After having another great tea time at Geelbek with very delicious cake
we are on the way back to Langebaan Gate.
The road is very busy, a lot of traffic and no animals.
We stop and I try to get a picture of a black-shouldered kit. Pity that it is so far away.

Image

Maybe because of this picture we are going to be in the right place at the right time ...

We drive on and suddenly I hear SO that there is a snake on the road.
Cape Cobra!

Image

larger view
very larger view

The Cape Cobra at our side of the road has raised its forebody of the ground.
It looks like drops of the snakes venom around the mouth and at the neck.

The snake moves towards the middle of the road.

Now the predator of the Cape Cobra arrives out of the bush, a grey mongoose!

Image

Image

It's mouth waters, look at the little tongue coming out of the mouth!

Image

larger view
very larger view

The mongoose walks across the road and the Cobra's head always moves towards it.

Image

Image

Image

The mongoose comes back again to the left side of the road ...

Image

... and then it disappears at the other side.

Image

It leaves behind a snake in highly defensive mode which now turned the head towards us.

Image

This is when I feel more safe with a closed window.

sable, WOW...    that is one amazing sighting with the Cape Cobra lifting its head. Just brilliantly captured.

You must have had a great time with some adrenalin pumping watching this. One cannot help thinking that that snake must not come close to the car or creep into the engine or somewhere.... :D

Thank you for sharing and just shows the smaller parks has their own 'rillers'....
