I live in hope that one day I will see lions in a picnic site.

The closest I have come is a lioness that had walked through DBK before we arrived and settled under a tree on the roadside 250 metres up the dune road.

By all accounts it could well be the lady who reared cubs in the ladies about a year later.

Maybe in 3 weeks time I will get lucky......

On one of our visits to KTP we stopped at Lijersdraai. My wife headed for the ladies but was back asking for help. There was a message written in the sand warning people of a puffy under the basin of the ladies loo. Sure enough puffy was still there. So thanks whoever it was!
So the moral, read the signs in the sand!! Seriously since that day we always check for tracks (or messages  )in the sand.

@ Sheenaugh - Lee: Maybe your question should be addressed to the "Forum" experts, but I can tell you that there are literally hundreds of different species of these creepy critters, if not thousands around the Globe. Most desert and semi desert areas have them except New Zeeland. According to Wikipedia there are "only" about 25 species that is able to kill a human and they mostly belong to the BUTHIDAE or FAT TAIL species (like the one top left in my picture), with a potent neuro toxic poison.

So..... never go bare feet at night, especially in the summer months in KTP and tell the kids as well!

@ Bush Babtist: Keep your eyes peeled in and around the toilets and picnic sites and best of luck when you go to KTP in three weeks time and bring back those precious pictures!

A warm welcome Jonkers, Tony T and Meandering Mouse!

Will do FMJ.

I always take a walk around the picnic site looking out carefully.

The best I have had is red roman spiders in the loo, and a honey badger trotting up the dune 100 metres away.

BB, Red Roman Spiders are enough to make me forget why I went to the loo! They are huge, and follow one's shadow, if you have a shadow in the loo!

I honestly do not want a close encounter with a Honey Badger! Not after I read other people's encounters with them on the forum!

I sincerely hope you find a Lion or a Leopard in your tent (if you are camping) in three weeks' time! But I don't mean it must attack you or something, it must just lie there, fast asleep, until you took enough pictures to prove the experience! Don't you think that will be fantastic? As long as it is not my tent!

On the 23rd December 2012, stopped for a picnic, and scanned the area for predators. Sure enough a lioness was watching up on the dune, a male lion was also lying nearby.
She moved behind the dune when she saw me looking up at her.She would peep over now and again to check on us.

On the 31st, on returning I had got out of the car not knowing that the car adjacent was busy taking photos of lions at their table !!
When the car moved my wife shouted that there are lions.

Warned arriving people to be aware, when the lions moved out of sight nearby.
Funny how people stare in disbelief when you tell them there are lions near you.

Thank you forestgump for posting those fantastic photos of the lions right at the picnic table! Although you forgot to mention which picnic site that was, I asume that they were taken at Melkvlei on the Nossob road. If this is the case, we saw those same lions a few days later at Melkvlei, but this time about a 100 hundred meters or so away under a tree! The date was 3rd or 4th January this year, in other words, only a few days after your amazing photos were taken! We counted two males and two female lions. Great pictures! FMJ

A warm welcome Jonkers :) thanks
nice after all those years, I'm reading the forum for a looooooooooooooong time now, it started all when there was only one page and even that one wasn't filled up
I'm more a reader in this language

So if the picnic sites and toilets are occupied, what do you do??
I can imagine it is easier for men, but what about the women and what if you have children
Wait and hope they go away, or drive carefully and hope the road was just graded, to the next toilet?

Sheenaugh-Lee, if I remember correctly, they are not scared of people anymore, and would rather attack than run away! Those claws look seriously dangerous to me, and I think they will bite too!
