Herons

They have certain feathers that break into powder. They rub this powder into their feathers. The feathers get sticky with slime when they feed on eels. The powder helps in removing the stickiness from their feathers. The rest of the stickiness they remove with their claws.

Rooies, onewithnature, Sparrow, Heksie

It is the hornbill indeed !!

Female hornbills build nests in hollows of large tree trunks and the opening is sealed with a plaster made up mainly of feces. She remains imprisoned in her nest until the chicks are semi-developed relying on the male to bring her food. During this period the female undergoes a complete moult (Dropping all of her feathers). She is fed by her mate through a slit in the seal. They do this primarily for nest defence.

The Fish Eagle is selective eater do not collect whatever is served up. Their preferred prey is Fish. It also selects a certain weight of that prey, about 0.2268 grammes.

"Aside from fish, this efficient raptor will also take the young of water birds such as the lesser Flamingo, and very occasionally will go for Monkeys, Crocodile hatchlings, Frogs and insects. Except for the odd dead fish, fully mature African Fish-Eagles rarely feed on Carrion unless food is particularly scarce".

I think you're spot on, Philip, except that I would change grams to kilograms - 0.23 kg of fish daily is about the average that a fish eagle consumes (more or less half a pound). :hmz: You'd think it was more than that, looking at their sheer size.

The amazing fact is that the female is larger than the male.

I saw a human couple today with the same body-proportion differential, Philip. The female was significantly larger than the tiny male.

Of course it must be a fish. Why is it called a fish eagle after all? So, no points for you two. Which type of fish? The weight is also not correct. (MY source is 'Birdlife Africa')
