History Of The Honorary Rangers (1964 - 1994)

The year 2004 marked the 40th anniversary of the South African National Park’s Honorary Rangers. On May 5th 1964, the first official part time, unpaid volunteers took to the roads in the Kruger National Park. The article which appeared in the Star newspaper of July 3rd 1963 which announced the recruitment drive said: "A system of honorary game wardens will be instituted in the Kruger National Park. This decision has been taken by the National Parks Board".
