Unique volunteer opportunity for SANParks' forum members in Kruger
A unique volunteer opportunity exists for two to four lucky SANParks' forum members who wish to participate in on-the-ground Fire Research in the Kruger National Park (KNP).
As part of the Savanna Fire Ignition Research Experiment (SavFIRE) with the Scientific Services Division, two research assistants are needed to aid scientists in the field in February 2010. The details of this work are as follows:
- Periods: 07 – 14th February 2010 & 20 – 26th February 2010
- Accommodation will be provided in the N’waswitshaka Research Camp for two people from 07 – 14th February 2010 and 20 – 26th February 2010 respectively. You will be required to assist where necessary with: field sampling of re-growth on experimental fire areas; drop off and pick-up research teams in and from the field (main responsibility); walk transects (between 6 to 8km per day) measuring biomass with a disc pasture meter and CyberTracker device.
- All research will be conducted in the Pretoriuskop section, travelling each day from Skukuza to the various sites. You will need to provide all your own meals and transport to the Park. A SANParks vehicle will be used during the field work.
