Public Sighting of the Month: 2006
Our Public Sightings Gallery receives dozens of great pictures every month, and we've decided to introduce the "public sighting of the month" to acknowledge the excellent entries. Eric Reisinger, SANParks photographer and photo editor, will select the photo, which will be displayed on our home page for the last week of every month.
This month's highlight was taken by Rob van de Wijngaard
"Last October we visited the Kglagadi Transfrontier Park and this Cape Fox with cubs was taken on the 11th of October 2006 a few km's south of the Kalahari Tented Camp-the light was beautiful and what a great sighting".
This spectacular sighting was captured by Maurice Mawson.
" The whole episode took place on Saturday 18th November at the small manmade waterhole about 10Km south of the turnoff to Olifants Camp called Ngotso North. The lions attacked the Hippo about 500m from the waterhole. They then rode on his back the distance to the water hole. We watched for about 1,5 hours, but had to leave as it was now getting dark. The next morning (Sunday 19th November) we went back and the waterhole was without Hippo. Unbelievably the injured Hippo had walked back 1.1km towards the Letaba direction and was lying at the side of the road. At 07.00am he was still alive. I was told by SANParks that the rangers found him dead in the same place a few hours later".
