Wild card an issue for same sex couples

Unread postby Bee eater » Wed Jan 29, 2014 8:42 pm

I would like to record my upset with regard to the constant discrimination my partner and I are subjected to every time we visit the West Coast National Park. We recently returned from the KNP where we never once had an issue. However at the WNP we experience an humiliating attitude from gate staff every time we visit. On occasion we have been refused entry on the basis that two people of the same sex cannot be on a family card. Last Saturday it happened again with the woman at the gate demanding that we explain to her how exactly how we managed to obtain a joint wild card and an explanation as how exactly I think 'we' could be a family. We pay the full price like everyone else and gay marriage is legal in South Africa - only people who don't seem to be aware of this are these WNP officials! We are requesting some type of constructive response from SAN Parks to this issue. It's a matter of time before someone captures this type of harassment on camera on makes a complaint to the HRC. We are passionate about SAN Parks but the west coast constantly disappoints. Perhaps the staff can tackle the reckless speeding in the park instead of harassing law abiding and paying customers.

That does seem strange as any 2 persons can share a couples card - whether they be male, female, adult or child!

Hi Bee eater. I will pass this issue onto SANParks PR and Wild Card. I'm so sorry you have had to encounter this.

For clarification, this is from the FAQ on the Wild Card site.

Do I have to be married to get a Couple Card?
No, the Couple Card is for any two people – there doesn’t have to be any legal connection between them. The Couple Card can be used for two friends, siblings or romantic partners. BOTH parties must be listed with ID or passport numbers. This means the card is specific to the two people listed on it.

This card could also be for two adults or one adult and one child.

Bee eater, I am so sorry that you have encountered this attitude. :gflower: I hope that it never happens again. Now that this has been clarified, it should be taken up with authorities.

This kind of discrimination is unacceptable and I can only say that it is not Sanparks policy.

Thank you everyone for your responses. Clearly the problem is to do with the attitude of the gate staff and perhaps training and not the wild card itself. However, as this has been the umpteenth time this has happened over a three year period since we first got the card I think it is time for an intervention. The last incident was on Saturday 25 Jan at around 2pm at the Langebaan entry gate.
